What is it?

Collecting and storing an individual’s DNA for future use.

When to consider DNA banking?

  • Patients and/or family members may realize or decide at a late stage in a patient’s medical course that genetic testing is desired. Our recommendation in this situation is to bank the patient’s DNA.
  • Patients not currently interested in genetic testing but who may have a hereditary form of cancer.

What is involved?

Please contact Molecular Genetic Services at 317-274-7597 for information on collection, cost and required forms. DNA banking requires an informed consent statement. If the patient is not capable of providing informed consent, the legal next of kin will need to sign the consent form.

A blood sample of peripheral blood (2 10ml EDTA [lavender topped] blood tubes) is collected and shipped by Federal Express to the Molecular Genetic Services Laboratory. The sample should arrive in the laboratory within 48 hours of collection. The peripheral blood sample should be drawn by a qualified professional.
